The Exarhate of Swede

The Swedish branch of the OCM is led by an order leadership led by an Exarch, who has several Commanderies to assist him. The Commanderies lead a Commandery. OCM Exarchate Sweden has four Commanderies that are geographically divided.

A commandery is a district within the Order that is managed by a commander with a convention. The commandery functioned as a local headquarters with its own activities that concern Knights in its catchment area.

Commander (originally from Latin commendare, to entrust) is today a governor of a commandery, i.e. a subdivision of an order province. In the knightly orders, commander originally designated a knight who managed the order's goods so that the knights and others had their estate-related expenses covered. It was stipulated that only necessary expenses would be covered, but control was limited. Often knights who had served for a long time became commanders, but in some cases the commanderies could be inherited.

It should be in place to also describe the discussions here regarding the naming of the respective commanderies. The first to have this discussion was "commandery south" which Duke Charles advocated early on. After the Latin name Carolus Dux was first presented, the name was approved. For “komturi nord” the choice was quite easy, as the Latin form of the name was felt to be given and thus Ericus Rex was established.

When later “komturi west” was formed, it was quickly agreed that any king equivalent was not relevant. More in that case a woman or something connected to the sea. The proposal that was adopted was Stella Maris Regina, “queen of the vault of heaven, synonymous with the Virgin Mary”. “Komturi Skåne” is the latest of our komturi, which partly took Lund’s patron saint, Saint Lars, and therefore became Sanct Laurentii Scaniæ.
